TOURING

Breckenridge and the surrounding mountains have endless touring opportunities for the avid mountaineer. Throughout the winter, the east and west sides of the Continental Divide provide easily accessible backcountry terrain. The areas close to Route 6 provide a bit more snowpack security as Colorado Department of Transport will help prevent dangerous avalanche conditions from washing out the roadways. Additionally, the peaks surrounding Breck are littered with fun stashes of untouched snow; however, you should not go exploring into the deep backcountry without proper training and equipment. As the climate warms during the spring, the snowpack becomes more stable and many of Colorado peaks become safely skiable. A great intermediate tour for spring time is at Quandary Peak (14,265′). The trailhead originates just 5 miles south of The Bivvi and climbs 3,450′ to the summit. From there, drop the far south into Cristo Couloir for a prime spring touring session. Again, only partake in these adventures if you have proper equipment (beacon, shovel, probe, +) and a degree of training (AIARE 1+ or equivalent).
